Pedalo
Overview
A pedalo is a small boat you pedal. You sit side by side, your feet turn a paddle wheel or a small propeller, and the boat glides across flat water. There is no engine and no paddle technique to learn, which is why it suits a lazy hour on a lake, a harbour potter, or a family loop out to a buoy and back.
What you can book
- Lake and park hire — a marked, sheltered area for a set time. The classic two- or four-seat boat.
- Harbour and river loops — still water inside a marina, quay or slow river, often with a simple out-and-back route.
- Family boats — extra seats, and sometimes a slide. Children ride with an adult; the operator sets the age rule.
What a session is like
Most bookings are 30–60 minutes of hire. You get a buoyancy aid and a short briefing on how to steer, turn and stop, then you are away inside a buoyed area. Pedalos are stable, but they are slow, and a headwind makes the return leg feel longer than the way out. They are for flat water. If the lake is choppy, the hire desk will close the boats.
Who it suits
Couples, families and friends who want time on the water without a sport to learn. You need to be able to pedal and to sit comfortably. It is a poor fit if you want speed, waves or a workout with proper technique — look at kayaking or paddleboarding for that.

FAQs
A pedal boat for calm water. You sit in it and drive it with your feet. Most hire boats take two or four people and stay inside a marked area on a lake, harbour or slow river.
No. A briefing covers steering and how to stop. If you can sit and pedal, you can take one out.
You wear a buoyancy aid. You should still be comfortable around water. Some lakes are shallow, but do not assume that — read the listing.
Often yes, with an adult in the boat. Minimum ages vary, and some boats need every rider to meet a weight or height rule so the boat sits level. Check the session.
Usually 30–60 minutes. That is enough for a loop of a small lake. Longer slots exist at bigger venues.
Ordinary clothes and shoes you can get splashed. Sunglasses and sun cream on a bright day. Leave anything you cannot afford to drop in the water on shore.
Wind and chop are the problem, not a bit of drizzle. Operators close pedalos when the water is no longer flat. You will be offered another time or a refund under their weather policy.
You sit upright and pedal, usually with someone beside you, and you stay in a small hired area. A kayak is a paddling craft you can take further, including on the sea and on white water. A pedalo is the social, low-skill option.
